How the ranking works
Shipgrit gives a stage to people who build consistently. Your rank comes from your GitHub activity – public and private (stealth) work count the same. Showing up every day beats a single marathon.
Why we rank this way
Most platforms reward reach: whoever already has the followers gets the attention. That leaves out a lot of people who quietly build great things every day. Shipgrit is meant to be the opposite – a place where the work itself earns the spotlight. That's why the ranking is built on a few principles:
- Effort, not audience. Followers, likes and GitHub stars don't affect your rank. Someone nobody knows yet can be #1 – simply by building.
- Consistency over bursts. Working a little every day counts far more than one all-nighter. That's what actually ships products – and it's what we want to celebrate.
- Spam doesn't pay. Splitting work into dozens of tiny commits or pushing empty changes barely helps: each extra contribution in a day is worth less than the one before, and anything beyond 12 a day doesn't count at all.
- Shipping counts extra. Releasing something is the hardest step, so every published release earns a bonus.
- Fair to everyone. The numbers come straight from GitHub, the rules are the same for everyone, and they're all explained on this page.
What counts as activity
Your daily GitHub contributions – the same numbers as the green squares on your GitHub profile: commits, pull requests, issues and reviews. Private work counts too when GitHub shows it in your contribution graph (turn on “Include private contributions on my profile” on GitHub, or connect private repos here). Published releases count extra as shipping (see below).
Your Builder Score
Every active day adds:
- 3 for showing up – the most important part: just being there counts
- Effort: up to 15 for the day's contributions, with diminishing returns – 1 contribution gives 4, 3 give 8, 7 give 12, and 12 or more give the maximum of about 15
- Streak: +0.5 for every day in a row, up to +3 – skip a day and it starts over
- Shipping: +6 per release, up to 2 releases a day
Day 4 of your streak, 5 commits and one release: 3 (showing up) + 10.3 (effort) + 1.5 (streak) + 6 (release) = 20.8 points.
- A little work every day (3 contributions): about 313
- Three huge marathon days: about 45
What doesn't count
- GitHub stars and followers – they measure popularity, not effort. Stars show up in “Most starred”, but don't affect your rank
- Projects you hide in your settings
- Forks (copies of other people's projects)
Stealth projects
Building something you don't want to show yet? Private repos (connected through our GitHub App) and public repos you mark as stealth count fully toward your rank. Others only see “Stealth project” with its tech stack and when you were last active – never the name, description, links or code.
Trends and updates
Once a day we remember everyone's rank; the arrows (▲ ▼) show how many places you moved since then. Your data is refreshed automatically every day, and you can refresh it any time in your settings.
